I have heard of children as young as 5 years of age being made to clean toilets in certain religious settings.
More details
We call on the Welsh Government to strengthen child safeguarding protections within religious organisations.
All children deserve protection from abuse, neglect, unsafe activities and harmful disciplinary practices, regardless of their family’s religious beliefs.
We ask the Welsh Government to:
• Review safeguarding practices within religious organisations;
• Clarify protections for children undertaking cleaning duties in religious organisations, particularly regarding chemical exposure, supervision and health and safety;
• Ensure religious organisations comply with applicable safeguarding and health and safety laws;
• Promote safe reporting procedures so children can raise concerns without fear of punishment or exclusion;
• Publish clear guidance for parents and religious organisations on their responsibilities to protect children;
No religious organisation should be above the law. Every child in Wales deserves equal protection,regardless of religious beliefs or practices.
