Question
What assessment has the Minister made of the impact of the new curriculum on children from poor backgrounds, following the ITV article from 30 January 2024 claiming that Welsh education is in crisis and that reforms will leave poorer children worse off?
Answer
Answered by Minister for Education and the Welsh Language
It is essential that we, and our partners across the education system, are able to draw on robust, reliable and trustworthy information to provide the right support to support all learners and tackle the impact of poverty on educational achievement.
Building on the ‘early insights’ studies and evaluation plan published last year, our formative evaluation programme enables researchers to work with schools across Wales to understand curriculum progress for all learners, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds. We are also developing national sample-based assessments to provide a rolling picture of standards in learning.
