Question
Will the Welsh Government outline what action is being taken and has been taken to increase the number of people undergoing dialysis at home?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care
The Quality Statement for Kidney Disease sets out our national approach to delivering high-quality, equitable care in Wales. It outlines the key expectations for health services to deliver for people with kidney disease. This includes a specific expectation for treatment and support to be provided close to or in people’s homes, with home dialysis being the first choice if kidney transplant is not possible.
Home dialysis has been demonstrated to improve outcomes and enhance quality of life. Wales set a national ambition for 20% of eligible individuals to receive haemodialysis at home.
The Welsh Kidney Network, which is part of the NHS Wales Joint Commissioning Committee, is responsible for planning and commissioning specialised adult kidney services in Wales. This includes supporting the NHS in Wales to deliver services in line with clinical standards and national expectations. The network is supporting efforts to expand access to home dialysis, providing the education, training and equipment to support people to dialyse at home.
The two regional providers in South Wales are working towards achieving the 20% national ambition. Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board exceeded 30% at the start of 2026.
