Powys is the biggest county in Wales and a mainly rural county, that currently relies heavily on out-of-county Health Boards. We are currently aware of delays in cross border provision and funding difficulties; and minor injury unit reduced hours. Currently Powys Teaching Health Board (PHTB) is looking at suggestions and methods of saving £23 million. These proposals may lead to a reduction of care provision within the county. WE SHOULD BE LOOKING AT INCREASED PROVISION NOT A REDUCTION.
More details
Currently Powys as a county has no general hospital provision. All emergency and major health care issues are undertaken out of county. With a current bed count per capita at around 1.2 per 1,000 residents. this is half of the UK average of 2.4. This bed provision is likely to reduce further if the two unit heath care proposal comes into effect. (Newtown & Brecon).
A General Hospital: would increase bed provision in Powys, reduce travelling times. decrease the out of county reliance of beds. also reduce the current county bed shortage that is currently creating bed blockers in other health boards, because of a bed shortage in Powys. PTHB's own admission is that the county requires 400 beds, currently it is around 160!!! If the implementation was carried out correctly PTHB may even be able to offer surrounding health boards bed space that every hospital is crying out for, generating income !! We should be looking for reasons why Powys health care provision should be increased.
