Thousands of Welsh children wear uniforms made largely from polyester, a plastic derived from fossil fuels. As concerns grow about microplastic pollution, Wales should lead the way by supporting natural fibres. Welsh wool is renewable, durable, warm and biodegradable. A shift towards Welsh wool uniforms could support Welsh farmers, strengthen local supply chains and reduce dependence on plastic-based clothing.
More details
Children in Wales wear school-uniforms for around 190/school days each year, yet many uniforms are made largely from polyester, fossil-fuel-derived plastic. Research in synthetic textiles release microplastics during wear, washing and drying, contributing to environmental pollution (European-Environment-Agency2022). Microplastics have been detected in human blood, lungs and placental tissue, with emerging evidence suggesting potential respiratory, digestive and reproductive health impacts, although further research is needed (WHO, 2022; Black et al., 2024).
Wales already produces a sustainable alternative. Welsh wool is renewable, biodegradable, durable, naturally warm and odour-resistant. Increasing the use of Welsh wool and cotton blends in school uniforms could reduce plastic pollution while supporting Welsh farmers, rural communities and local supply chains.
Why are Welsh children wearing plastic when Wales produces wool?
