Question
What steps is the Welsh Government taking to ensure timely assessments for applicants to local housing registers, such as the single access route to housing service in Denbighshire, to prevent vulnerable tenants from falling into homelessness during housing disputes and delays?
Answer
Answered by Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government
Local authorities are required by Section 167 of the Housing Act 1996 to have an allocation scheme that determines the authority’s priorities and procedures to be followed in allocating social housing.
In determining their specific scheme, local authorities must have regard to the Welsh Government’s Code of Guidance, which provides guidance on the allocation scheme and procedures to be followed in allocating housing provision.
Section 167 of the Housing Act 1996 also specifies applicants must be notified of decisions taken in relation to their preference and requires that applicants have a right to review on any of these decisions, providing a means of dealing with individual disputes.
