Just to build on some of the things that I said before as well, automation, AI, big data and data science, et cetera, are clearly going to have a place in manufacturing. To a previous Member's questions, there is going to be a competitive edge for companies in Wales.
I have also previously mentioned the importance of regulation here as well. From an aerospace and aviation industry perspective, we are heavily regulated, and rightly so. The regulation and the ways of working drive us to ensure that we put safety first, and that we put the safety of the flying public before all else. But I think that it is important that things move in tandem—so, improvements in processes or ways of working are supported by AI and digital solutions and automation.
It's certainly, in the current state, unlikely that—and this my personal view—tomorrow, certain processes will be wholly replaced by robot automation. It will be a hybrid model for the foreseeable future, particularly if there is regulation governing how work needs to be done. So, the balance is going to be important.
I think that, where there are benefits—and it would perhaps be good to see more of this in the document from the Welsh Government—is in terms of where improvements have been made. I have already mentioned that for some companies and industries and workplaces, a 'digital solution' will be a change from something manual or a hard copy to an iPad or a digital display. So, a digital solution, or the introduction of digital solutions or automated processes, doesn't necessarily mean a negative impact on workers. I think that that is a dangerous precedent to set, and a worrying tone to lead with, as Keith has mentioned.
So, if everything is considered in the round, that's important because, if new solutions are introduced sensibly and sensitively, in partnership, then there are huge benefits to have because the individuals who are doing the work will understand more how, if we are able to automate A, B and C, then that will free me up to do X, Y and Z. While there is not a huge amount of detail in the plan to date—and I understand that, at the pace at which, particularly, automation or AI moves, it is difficult to put a line in the sand for that—I think that it will be important that the Welsh Government and the relevant Minister are fleet of foot and nimble enough, from a policy perspective, to be able to respond and encourage as well, because there will be huge benefits for companies. I know that there are case studies in the document itself. I think, for example, freeing up human capability to do the creative problem-solving, thinking element if you can replace or support small, repetitive, manual, for example, measurement tasks, that will be a huge benefit as well.
