How does the Welsh Government plan to support the development of a low-carbon hydrogen sector in Wales, in light of the UK Government's investment of £400 million in green hydrogen, including projects in Wales?

We are fully supportive of low-carbon technologies that will assist an accelerated pathway to our net-zero ambitions, and our statutory obligations. We have already supported several feasibility studies and demonstration projects across Wales, and I welcome the recent UK Government’s announcement of the 11 successful projects identified in the first phase of the Hydrogen Allocation Round, two of which are in Wales including one already in receipt of Welsh Government funding.
The Welsh Government established Net Zero Industry Wales to further push the interests of Welsh industry in the context of net-zero targets, low-carbon hydrogen development and other decarbonising technologies. This work will support the existing cluster activities across Wales which involve the development of infrastructure to deliver low carbon hydrogen.
During the early part of 2024, we will be publishing a consultation on our hydrogen policy position. We have worked with industry stakeholders to collate the necessary evidence to progress hydrogen potential within Wales, to unlock and encourage further investment of hydrogen. We anticipate our position will give clarity and assurance to industry and maintain alignment with our Carbon Budget responsibilities.
