How is the Cabinet Secretary working with local authorities to ensure that Welsh produce is used in school meals?

Atebwyd gan Cabinet Secretary for Education
We are working closely with local authorities to increase the use of Welsh produce in school meals. Through Universal Primary Free School Meals, we have raised awareness of the benefits of local sourcing, provided procurement training, embedded expectations within grant terms and conditions, and supported collaborative pilots that strengthen supply chains. As a result, local authority spend on Welsh food has risen significantly since 2021.
The Welsh Government’s cross-government approach is helping local authorities embed local considerations into food procurement. This has strengthened local supply chains, ensured more Welsh produce is available to councils, and kept more public spending within Wales.
